Since this list is starting to get pretty populated, I figured I'd take my best stab at coming up with the "ideal" set of newbie gear.  Feel free to edit if you think differently.  Keep in mind the most important thing about newbie gear is raising your wis/int/con, so make sure you have your level gear situated before you try to boost your ac or hr/dr.
